New students(The Cathay Life Medical Insurance)  |   National Health Insurance(NHI)


According to the National Health Insurance Act, Foreigners staying in Taiwan for over 6 months are obligated to take out the insurance policy under National Health Insurance (NHI).
However, new students who are coming to Taiwan for the first time cannot join Taiwan's NHI until the 7th month of their arrival,
before that, new students can choose "The Cathay Life Medical Insurance", a one-time payment of NTD3,000 for 6 months (NTD500 per month *price might change).
Or, bring your own medical care insurance certification and with verification by Taiwan's Embassy & Mission. 

International Students Insurance and NHI Insurance information 

 

When New Student go through registration in NTUE, please choose one option on Orientation day (same as registration day):

  1. At least 6 months of valid medical and injury insurance. The documents should also have been verified by Taiwan's overseas institutes.
  2. Or, the students who apply for "Cathey Life Medical Insurance" should submit NT$3,000.
  3. If students have stayed in Taiwan for a period of time, you can submit a copy of the NHI card and finish NHI Transfer in Application Form/NHI Declaration Statement.
  4. The methods of Insurance should choose one option to submit, and submit to the Division of International Affairs before the deadline of the registration.


Make a claim
In order to facilitate your claim after you have purchased the International Students Group Medical Insurance, please observe the following when seeking medical treatment during the coverage period: 

        1. Make sure that you go to one of the National Health Insurance covered hospitals or clinics if you are seeking medical treatment.
        2. After paying for the treatment. be sure to get:

  • A receipt
  • The treatment details with the doctors' signature

        3. Fill out the Insurance Claim Form (Chinese version only)(bring to DIA we will help you out)
        4. Bring the required documents to the DIA and we will assist you to make your claim
        5. Required documents are below.

a. The original receipts of payment

b. Treatment details with the doctor's signature

c. Insurance Claim Form

d. 1 copy of your deposit book's cover

e. 1 copy of your passport & ARC/Resident Visa of each

Coverage 
Outpatient/Emergency treatment benefit:
While this Policy is still effective, if the Insured suffers an illness or injury and receives (emergency) treatment at a hospital/clinic as an outpatient, the company will reimburse all medical expenses incurred. However, the payment of the benefit shall not exceed the limit of 1000 NTD (per visit).
 
Daily hospital room benefit:
While this Policy is still effective, if the Insured suffers an illness or injury and receives treatment at a hospital as an inpatient, the company will reimburse the following expenses incurred. 1. Balance billing on hospital rooms. 2. Food, except for nutrients provided through tube feeding. 3.Nursing care fee excluding special nurse fees. However, the payment of the benefit shall not exceed the limit of 1000 NTD (per day).
 
Hospital miscellaneous benefit:
While this Policy is still effective, if the Insured suffers an illness or injury and receives treatment at a hospital as an inpatient, the company will reimburse the following expenses incurred.
1.Physician instructions medication.
2.Blood, except for blood transfusions deemed necessary by a doctor providing emergency care
3.Registration fee and cost of obtaining related certificates
4. Ambulance fee(from or between hospitals).
5.Operation fee.
6.Operation room, post-operative recovery room, emergency room, or the application of its equipment. 7.Materials fee.
8.Laboratory tests, electrocardiogram, basal metabolic rate check.
9.Rehabilitation therapy.
10.Anesthetics, oxygen, and its application.
11.Therapeutic radiology.
12.Hemodialysis.
13.Injection and its liquid medicine.
14.Laboratory examination. 15.Treatment. However, the payment of benefit shall not exceed the limit of 120,000 NTD (per hospitalization).
 
The provisions of the insured 
Insurer qualifications:Limited to foreign students(including Mainland China students and Overseas Chinese students).
Insured age limit:From 15 years old to 50 years old.
Insured’s name shall be specified in the policy
Policy period/term:One year.
Premium mode:Yearly, Half-yearly, Quarterly, Monthly
 
Note:

2. The terms and conditions of the insurance policy (Chinese version) shall prevail if there is any inconsistency between the above information and the insurance policy.

Insurance Claim Form (Chinese version only ) 

 

The National Health Insurance Act stipulates that foreign nationals with valid ARC or Resident Certificate for the Taiwan area (including those from Hong Kong, Macau, and China) must be registered in the National Health Insurance program upon living in Taiwan for 6 months ( 6 months of continuous residence in Taiwan or with one trip abroad not exceeding 30 days when the actual residency period of 6 months is reached after the days abroad have been deducted).

 

Premium Payment and Amount
The premium of each international student is NTD$826 each month (according to the current charging standard announced by the National Health Insurance Administration, Ministry of Health and Welfare), and the premium from September to February of the next year (A total of NTD$ 4,956) should be paid in the first term and the premium from March to August (A total of NTD$ 4,956) should be paid in the second term.

Transfer of Insurance Cover
I. For students entering Taiwan for the first time and staying less than 6 months, the transfer procedure of insurance cover and the application for IC card mentioned in the case shall be carried out when the duration of stay reaches 6 months according to the regulation of the National Health Insurance Law. The above-mentioned 6 months mean 6 months of continuous residence in Taiwan or with one trip abroad not exceeding 30 days when the actual residency period of 6 months is reached after the days abroad have been deducted.
II. For students entering Taiwan for the first time and have stayed over 6 months, please go to the Division of International Affairs of Research and Development Office to draw the health insurance paying-in slip and pay the fees, then take the receipt, passport, ARC, and 2-inch photo to the Division of International Affairs to transfer the insurance into our university and apply for the IC card. Later, the IC card application forms will be sent by us to the Bureau of National Health Insurance for card verification and manufacturing and you will be informed of the card.
III. For those who have insurance covered at other organizations (such as language schools, work units, and offices of villages, towns, or cities) and would like to transfer their insurance into our school, please go to the original units to opt-out of the insurance and obtain the transfer bill or transfer certificate, and then go to the Division of International Affairs to draw the health insurance paying-in slip and pay the fees, then take the receipt and the transfer certificate to the Division of International Affairs to transfer the insurance into our university.

 

Student Insurance Transferring or Opting-Out
I. For transfer students to other universities to study, please go to the Division of International Affairs to go through the procedures of premium refund and opting-out matters.
II. For students of temporary suspension from school, expulsion from school, and graduates, please go to the Division of International Affairs to go through required procedures regarding the affairs of insurance cancellation, premium refund.

 

In regard to matters on reissuing or renewal of Health Insurance IC card
Due to damage, loss, change of photo, and related matters, please go to the Bureau of National Health Insurance to pay the IC card fee of NTD$ 200 and fill out the application form to apply for a new one.
